Bassenthwaite Reflections is a £2.8m Heritage Lottery funded landscape partnership scheme. The programme originally consisted of 22 projects, but has since increased to 30 projects, offering a wide range of activities to engage people in getting to know and understand the landscape of the Bassenthwaite catchment, with a view to changing those things that are damaging the lake. The Reflections projects are split into five themes: access for all, community woodlands, cultural routeways, landscape shaped by water and education. Funding for the programme is principally from the Heritage Lottery Fund Landscape Partnership Scheme, with match funding provided by the Leonardo da Vinci Fund, Culture 2000, Leader Plus and European ‘Youth’ funds through Grampus Heritage and Training Ltd. Each project provides an opportunity for participants to understand the issues and learn about the value of the lake and its surrounding environment, as well as contributing to the preservation, restoration and protection of the ecology and important natural habitats. A number of the projects also encourage people to learn about and celebrate the cultural heritage of the landscape, and there are opportunities to increase and enhance skills, education and attainments for people of all ages thereby improving the employment potential of local people. |
