17 November 2010 Cockermouth is set to unveil secrets buried for nearly 2,000 years in an exhibition revealing a nationally important discovery.
Remains of a Roman water mill were unearthed during a major dig this summer and historic finds are being put on public view. The town’s tourist information centre is hosting a display from 26 November until 10 December when artefacts and pictures tell a story dating back to the first or second century. Throughout August, volunteers from Heritage Lottery Fund supported Bassenthwaite Reflections excavated an area alongside the River Derwent, at Papcastle. Last year’s devastating floods threw up compelling artefacts and Reflections decided to back a formal dig, led by Cumbrian specialists Grampus Heritage and Training. Investigation archaeologist, Mark Graham, said: “This was an incredibly important find, the first watermill to be uncovered in “Foundation stones compatible with a mill were found, as well as fragments from a structure which could have supported the wheel. “The mill might have ground wheat, or even driven bellows to smelt iron. It’s more than likely the building would have served nearby Papcastle fort and been part of the civilian settlement which sprang up around it.” Mark said he hoped people would enjoy sharing the excitement of the discovery through photographs and Roman relics such as inscribed stones. He added: “Reflections’ volunteers put in well over 100 days on this dig and it is through their dedication we have been able to achieve such a great result. “We hope people enjoy the exhibition and see how the finds play an important part in showing the Roman occupation jigsaw.” For more information about the exhibition, call Reflections on 017687 74785/ 73204 This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
