Masmill Oakwood Volunteer Project |
|
We hold regular Woody Workdays which give volunteers the chance to get involved in the hands-on restoration of Masmill Oakwood. We aim to open up spaces for the oaks to naturally regenerate, so work focuses on: clearing self-seeded conifer saplings, clearing brash, bracken, checking tree tubes and removing competing vegetation. The Forestry Commission have also cleared a 3.5 hectare site of established conifers to enable volunteers to restock this area with native species and extend the area of native upland oak. We also hold other activities including dry stone walling training. This enables volunteers to learn the skill of dry stone walling and then practice this skill in helping repair and maintain the dry stone walls along Masmill Beck. Our Family Tree Planting days encourage families to join us in helping replenish our oak woodland to preserve its unique character. The variety of tree species ranging from native oak, to a few crab apple and hawthorn saplings encourages more natural and diverse wildlife. Volunteer activities are delivered in partnership with the Forestry Commission education team.
